How
a House is Built
This is a “how-to”
book on the construction of a small, simple, and sustainable house. The
house starts with a surveyed layout, an excavation referenced from a workpoint,
and the installation of footings and stem walls for a raised foundation.
Next, the framing for the floor, walls, and open ceilings are erected
followed by the doors, windows, trim, siding, and metal roofing to close
the house in. The plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems are then
roughed-in at the end of the book in preparation for finish work that
is completed online as an interactive chapter.
Each chapter ends with a “Hands-On”
section with how-to tutorials that include navigating
through a design model, excavating a model base, assembling a foundation
wall, fabricating and erecting framing members, extruding 3D objects from
2D details, running pipes and wires through the walls and ceilings, and
a series of small projects that emphasize the use of the Outliner and
its importance in construction modeling. More

Being SUSTAINABLE
This book details the mechanics of sustainability and the challenge
of integrating building systems to maximize their efficiency. The point
of the book is to help readers understand the challenges designers and
constructors face putting a building together as a single, fully integrated,
and sustainable collection of building systems. To meet this objective
the book uses a graphic narrative style. The narrative follows the sequence
of system installations, each in support of the other, but all crowded
into the same space. The players in this narrative are the engineers who
size and specify each of these systems, as well as the subcontractors
who must coordinate, compromise, and assemble them in the real world.

Building
SIMPLE
This book uses the same graphic style found in all our construction
books to illustrate the construction of a mid-rise office building. This
is a great book for those who need or want to see and understand every
step of the construction of a commercial building. It uses 3D SketchUp
construction models to organize and detail the construction methods used
to build this building, including layout, excavation, foundations, framing,
and the exterior shell. Construction models can be used to manage risk,
reduce waste, and enhance jobsite safety. Building SIMPLE helps readers
understand how to use construction models in support of the "art
of construction," an invisible process embedded in all the structures
in our built environment. More information...

3D Construction
Modeling
This classic construction book was in its 16th printing before
it was retired in early 2008 (Now back in limited printing to select booksellers).
The book uses a trial version of SketchUp 4.0 to take readers step by
step through the construction of a wood framed house. The tutorials take
a hands-on approach to learning SketchUp and is a great way to learn 3D
modeling and the basics of wood frame construction. Though there are differences
between SketchUp V4 and the latest Google upgrades, the simplicity of
the early version of SketchUp and the principles of construction modeling
in this book can be adapted for use with all versions of SketchUp. More
